Understanding Multi-Currency Support

How currency works for subscriptions, client tracking, and payments.

4 min read

RemindToPay supports multiple currencies, but they work differently depending on what you're doing. This guide explains the three contexts where currency matters.

The Three Currency Contexts

1. Your Subscription (Paying RemindToPay)

When you subscribe to RemindToPay Pro, you pay us in the currency you select from the header dropdown.

Key points:

  • Use the currency selector in the top navigation to choose your billing currency
  • Only enabled currencies appear in the dropdown (GBP, USD, EUR, etc.)
  • Your Pro subscription is charged monthly in your selected currency
  • Prices vary by currency (e.g., GBP £9.99, USD $12.99, EUR €11.99)

Changing currency: You can change your subscription currency at any time. The change takes effect on your next billing cycle.

2. Client Tracking (Dashboard, Reminders, Receipts)

When you add a client, you set their currency. This determines how amounts appear throughout RemindToPay.

Key points:

  • Set per-client when adding or editing them
  • Works in any currency (even disabled ones like JPY, CHF, SGD)
  • Dashboard groups totals by currency (e.g., GBP: £2,500 | USD: $1,200)
  • Reminders, invoices, and receipts display amounts in the client's currency
  • No conversion happens - amounts stay in their original currency

Example: A UK tutor with US clients can track those clients in USD. Their dashboard shows both GBP and USD totals separately.

3. Payment Collection (How You Get Paid)

How currency affects receiving money depends on the payment method.

Card Payments (via Stripe):

  • Only work with enabled currencies
  • Your Stripe account receives funds in the client's currency
  • Stripe handles conversion to your payout currency

Bank Transfers:

  • Work with any currency (no restrictions)
  • You and your client arrange the transfer directly
  • No processing fees through RemindToPay
  • You mark the payment as received manually

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I select a certain currency for my subscription?

That currency's region isn't currently enabled. We roll out regions gradually based on Stripe availability and local payment requirements. You can still track clients in that currency - only subscription payments and client card payments require enabled currencies.

I only use bank transfers. Does currency matter?

Yes, but less restrictively. Client currency affects:

  • How amounts display in your dashboard
  • How reminders and invoices are formatted
  • How receipts appear to your clients

Bank transfers themselves always work regardless of currency. There are no processing fees and no restrictions on which currencies you can use.

Can I have clients in different currencies?

Absolutely. Many service providers work with international clients. Each client has their own currency setting. Your dashboard shows totals grouped by currency, so you can see "GBP: £3,200" and "USD: $800" as separate figures.

What happens if I change a client's currency?

The currency change applies to future reminders and invoices. Historical payment records keep their original currency for accurate record-keeping.

Do I need to do anything for currency conversion?

No. RemindToPay doesn't convert currencies. If you receive a card payment in USD and want it in GBP, Stripe handles that conversion when paying out to your bank. Bank transfers are arranged directly between you and your client.

Real-World Scenarios

Scenario 1: UK Provider with US Clients

Setup:

  • Your subscription: GBP (selected in header)
  • UK clients: Currency set to GBP
  • US clients: Currency set to USD

What happens:

  • Your Pro fee is charged in GBP
  • UK client reminders show GBP amounts
  • US client reminders show USD amounts
  • Dashboard shows: "Due: GBP £1,500 | USD $2,000"
  • Both can pay via card (GBP and USD are enabled)
  • Stripe deposits to your account, converting USD as needed

Scenario 2: Using a Disabled Currency (Japanese Client)

Setup:

  • Your subscription: GBP
  • Client: Currency set to JPY (disabled region)

What happens:

  • Client tracking works normally (JPY amounts display correctly)
  • Reminders show JPY amounts
  • Dashboard includes JPY in the breakdown
  • Card payments won't work (JPY not enabled for Stripe)
  • Bank transfer works perfectly (client sends JPY directly)
  • You mark payment received manually

Workaround: If your Japanese client prefers card payment, set their currency to USD or another enabled currency. They'll see USD amounts and pay in USD.

Scenario 3: Switching Your Subscription Currency

Before: Pro subscription in GBP (£9.99/month) Action: Change header currency to EUR After: Next billing cycle charges EUR (€11.99/month)

Your client currencies don't change - only your subscription billing currency changes.

Summary

  • Subscription payments: Enabled currencies only
  • Client tracking: Any currency works
  • Card payments from clients: Enabled currencies only
  • Bank transfers: Always work, any currency, no fees

When in doubt: bank transfers have no currency restrictions and no fees. Card payments give your clients convenience but require enabled currencies.
